Discover Why You Must Use Keyword Research Tools Here!

Now, I am going to give you a great article written by Jill from HighRankings sites. You'll discover what keyword research tools are good for and why you must use keyword research tools.

"In basic terms, the competitiveness of any given keyword or phrase is based on how many pages online there are in the search engines' database which are optimized for the keywords in question.

Many people do a search at Google using their keyword phrase and erroneously judge their competitiveness based on the number of results that are returned. For example, if your phrase is "search engine spam" you might type that into Google (without quotation marks) and see that there are about 40,400,000 results for that phrase.

That's not much help in determining how competitive that phrase is, as it's simply telling you that there are over 40 million pages that Google knows about using the words "search," "engine," and "spam" somewhere on the page, in the indexable code, or in links pointing to that page.

Now, you could get a bit closer to determining the competitiveness of a phrase by putting it in quotes when you search for it in Google. Doing that with our phrase "search engine spam" returns about 150,000 results. See how that's a huge difference from 40 million? The search with quotes ends up showing you how many pages Google knows about that have that exact phrase somewhere in their indexable code or in links pointing to the page.

Still, just because a page is using a given phrase doesn't mean it's actually optimized for that phrase. Many of those 150,000 pages may not be optimized at all, and might be easily beatable in the results with just a bit of work.

To narrow down the field a bit more and have Google show you only pages that have been optimized (at least in some rudimentary fashion) you can type your phrase into Google using the "intitle" command. For our phrase, put this into the Google search box: intitle:"search engine spam" — this command returns all the pages that have used the phrase "search engine spam" in their Title tag. As most of you know, keywords placed in Title tags are given a ton of weight by all search engines. If a page is using a phrase in its Title tag, it’s safe to assume that it's been optimized, at least a little bit.

Google returns about 1,040 results for pages with that phrase in the Title tag. Big, huge difference from that original 40 million! At this point, it's clear to see that those 1,000+ pages are indeed your competition. Further study of them will be in order to determine just how optimized they actually are. Many of them are probably using the phrase *only* in the Title tag and might be easily beat in the rankings with just a little work on your part.

Now, compare the intitle results for "Britney Spears" and you'll find about 985,000 that have her name in their Title tag. So you'd have to have a page that was better and more relevant than the nearly million others that are about Britney Spears. Trying to be better and more relevant than 1,000 other pages is daunting enough, but 1 million? Just not worth the time and effort, in my opinion.

So now that I've illustrated why using keyword research tools to find the most-searched phrases is a useless exercise, let's get back to the original question.

What exactly are keyword research tools good for?

They are great for finding the keyword phrases that people are actually searching for when they would be looking for your products or services at the search engines.

So in your page about dogs, no, you don’t want to use the keywords "canine," "dog," "k-9," "puppies," etc. Absolutely not! Optimizing for one-word, general keywords such as those is just as bad as optimizing for "Britney Spears." Our handy-dandy intitle search for "dogs" shows us about 5,650,000 results, and about 1,200,000 for "canine." Those are not optimizable keywords.

In SEO — and more specifically when researching keywords — the idea is to find the phrases people use in which decent search engine rankings are also attainable. Sure, you can guess at phrases like we used to have to do in the old days, but why guess when you don’t have to?

What you need to do is go to the Research Keywords section of Wordtracker or KeywordDiscovery and start typing in your brainstormed phrases. The tools will let you know which are used by real people at real engines and which are not. They will also provide you with other ideas for phrases you may not have thought of. You can even put in a single word such as "dog" and get back every phrase that has "dog" contained within it. From there, you'd want to narrow it down to the phrases that most relate to what your site offers and which are also attainable in the rankings.

Be sure to research phrases for each page of your site. Certainly your site is not just about dogs in general, but about specific dog things. Maybe you offer all kinds of dog chew-toys. If so, you'll want to research all the phrases that have to do with this, including things like "squeaky rubber bone," etc.

Using our previous example, some quick research at KeywordDiscovery shows that the phrase "search engine spam" gets searched upon less than once per day, so it's not an ideal phrase to optimize for, in my opinion. Still, it does show up on their radar, and I imagine it might bring some traffic now and then if I had a page optimized for it. I see my buddy Alan Perkin’s "Classification of Search Engine Spam" paper is in the top 10 for that keyphrase. I'll have to ask him if he gets much traffic on the phrase. And who knows, maybe this article will eventually show up in the results for it too once I upload it to the archives."

For example, if you are selling cars in Toronto, you may want to combine "Toronto" with "cars", or if you are targeting a specific demographic, you may want to include that it in keyword. You may find that the competition for that term drops significantly, thereby, increasing your chances of success.
By increasing your presence for these targeted key terms, you are in a better position to optimize for more ambitious keywords in the future.

4. Using the right tools
By no means are the following the only tools you should use, but they are some popular free keyword research tools that are simple, straightforward and ideal to help you get started in keyword researching.

6. Smooth Integration with page content

PPC
While in PPC, you have the freedom to target more broad terms and loosely related terms, you must also consider that people who have clicked on your ad are expecting to see what they searched for. If your site has no relevance to what they keyword was, you probably just wasted $0.50.

SEO
When choosing keywords for SEO, you need to be much more selective. Remember, you will need to put these keywords on your page, and if you want to do SEO well, these terms are probably going to be in very prominent areas on your page. Make sure these terms make sense and can fit well into the context of your content.
Remember, when doing keyword research for SEO initiatives; do not ONLY aim for the terms with highest search volume and lowest competition. While that is generally a good rule of thumb, you must not forget the main point of search engine optimization, you are delivering more web users to your site, but you will ultimately need your web content to speak to your potential customers, so using keywords that make sense, and are related to your content is just as important as choosing obtainable keywords.

To help illustrate this phenomenon, let's take a look at the typical step-by-step buying path that a customer travels on the way to a making a purchase.

Consumer becomes aware of a product.
Consumer seeks information about that product in preparation for possible purchase.
Consumer evaluates alternatives to product (features, pricing, etc...).
Consumer makes their purchase decision.
Consumer pulls out their credit card and completes the transaction.
Consumer then evaluates the product after buying it and decides if they want to keep or return it.
Using the above six step path to a purchase as our model, you can probably already see that you want to target the consumer who is somewhere around step 4...

Consumer makes their purchase decision.

...because once they have made their decision to buy something, that's when they start using very specific search phrases to seek out their target purchase.

Now for the GOOD news...

Highly specific multi-word phrases tend to be far easier to rank well for than the more generic single keyword or double keyword phrases.

Here's a specific example. Let's say your site sells guided mountain climbing tours in California. At first, you might consider targeting a generic phrase like travel. After all, an adventure tour is generally the type of excursion people like to participate in while traveling on vacation.

However, if you tried to go after that phrase, you'd be facing direct competition from big sites like Yahoo.com, CNN.com and Travelocity.com. It's unlikely you'd be able to knock any of those sites out of the top 10 unless you're willing to invest a pile of money and a mountain of time.

But, even more important, travel isn't the best phrase for you to target anyway. That's because many people who search using that phrase are looking for items such as plane tickets, ocean cruises or just doing very general research on where they might like to go. They're probably not saying to themselves...

"I'm looking for someone who sells guided tours for beginners to climb Mount Shasta so I can take my family on a fun trip this summer."

If they were, they'd be entering something different than travel.

Even if you were to target a more specific phrase like mountain climbing you'd still be up against heavy hitters like About.com, Wikipedia.org, and the USDA forest service. And, unless you sell everything related to mountain climbing for every mountain around the world, the traffic you'd get for that keyword isn't likely to convert to many sales.

So let's look at some of the keywords that are specific to what you're selling—keywords that you can start ranking for and generating traffic and sales right away.

Here are a few highly specific keyphrases that relate to customers who are much later in the buying cycle—at least at step 3, probably at step 4 and possibly step 5:

california mountain climbing tours
beginner mountain climbing in california
guided mountain climbing tours
mount shasta family climbing tours
Of course, these are just a few examples. I'm sure you could think of many more. However, the point is twofold;

The long tail keywords are much easier to rank for.
People who search by using long tail keywords are far more likely to become buyers!
More Good News...

Of course this suggests that you should be creating pages that zero-in on snagging searchers who use long tail keywords. And, since there are potentially so many different long tail combinations that searchers may use to buy what you offer, that means you'll likely be creating more pages.

Well the goods news is that Google likes sites that have more pages. It makes the site look more substantial, more natural, and even more real in the eyes of the world's most popular search engine. Bear in mind that your "unique" pages need only be variants of your main offering(s) but focused on a specific long tail niche.

Therefore, each and every page will have a unique title, description meta tag, h1 header tag, and body content that emphasizes your offering by using the long tail keyword that you choose for each specific page. It isn't rocket science, but it sure does work well to snag consumers at the optimum stage of the buying process!

So, instead of focusing on just two or three highly competitive general keywords, target the dozens or even hundreds of easy-to-rank-for long tail keywords.

Also bear in mind, however, that the downside of focusing too much effort on the long tail is, if you target phrases which are too specific, you might not get enough traffic to sustain your business. That's why it's best to have:

a few pages sending you large amounts of less-targeted traffic, and
a large number of pages with each sending you small amounts of highly targeted traffic.
But overall, it's best to think of it this way; would you rather rank for one keyword which sent you 1000 visitors a day or 200 keyphrases, half of which sent you 1 buyer a day?

After you do the math you'll see that 100 buyers are much better than 1000 site visitors who are only doing research. And there is no question that the use of ultra-specific keywords demonstrate a greater intent to buy on the part of the customer. This simply leads to more sales which is, of course, what you are really after.

There's just no substitute for Research
In the end there is no substitute for doing your keyword research and determining which keywords have enough traffic to make them worth going after. And this effort must be dovetailed with doing your competitive intelligence research to determine which keywords you'll be able to rank for based on the sites you'd have to compete against.

My bottom line is that I totally agree with this article. I strongly believe that long-tail keywords are MUCH better than general keywords. For example, if you are using pay-per-click to drive traffics to your website, I am sure that long-tail keywords will give you very high conversion rate. The more conversion rate you have, the more sales you get!
