"It's one of the worst things to ever happen in the search engine copywriting field: the discovery of keyword density. I won't venture off into a discussion about whether keyword density is still a valid measure of search engine optimized (SEO) copywriting success. I will say, however, that the mere introduction of this concept led to the mutilation and destruction of innocent copy all across the globe. Without any regard to flow or customer experience, website owners around the world began shoving keyphrases into their copy like wild men. The results have been disastrous! Otherwise wonderful content has been utterly destroyed. This slaughter of innocent copy must stop!

All joking aside, the realization several years ago that keyword density was a factor in search engine rankings instantly transformed the landscape of copywriting for the engines. That lone concept lit a fire under people who absolutely butchered their copy for the sake of the engines. A pity really because it doesn't have to be that way.

Keep It Sounding Natural

One primary goal is to write copy so that the keyphrases are virtually undetectable when read by someone with no knowledge of SEO. One vital step in making this happen is to carefully research and select your keyphrases.

If you're writing a page about wedding gowns, it would be complicated to include keyphrases such as "wedding reception music" or "wedding caterers." The amount of traffíc these terms might bring would be offset by the awkward fit with the focus of your page. Instead, opt for phrases that lend themselves directly to the topic of wedding gowns.

One common mistake many site owners and newbie copywriters make is to replace every single instance of a generic key term with one of their chosen keyphrases. Doing this in moderation is certainly acceptable, but frequently copywriters get carried away with tragic results.

For example, you would not want to have the following copy on your site:

Spanish Villas For Rent If you are looking for Spanish villas vacations, search our site for the best deals in Spanish villas. No other Spanish villas site has the selection of premium Spanish villas with the most sought after locations that we have. View some of our Spanish villas pictures or take virtual tours of our Spanish villas today.

Whew! I get tired just reading that! Not only is it extremely annoying to read, but also many of the phrases are used incorrectly, making it look as though there are typos on the page. Not a pretty sight!

To keep your copy sounding as natural as possible, you need to think outside the keyword box. Most often, people believe that writing in a similar manner as the example above is the only way to use keywords in copy. Not true! In fact, far from it.

Let me share three of my favorite tips with you for creative writing with keyphrases.

Don't Use Keyphrases To Describe Your Products/Services

That's right, I said DON'T use keyphrases to describe your own products or services. Instead, use them to describe what your product or service is not, or what it is similar to or what it is better than.

An example of this is any keyphrase that begins with the word "cheap." "Cheap insurance," "cheap sunglasses," "cheap software" - the líst is endless. It's simply not a good idea to call your own product cheap. Yes, I understand that people are looking for cheap things, but that is because they don't want to pay a lot. When THEY call your product cheap, it is in relation to price. When YOU call your own product or service cheap, it degrades the product or service's perceived value.

Instead, let others know that your product is NOT cheap. For example:

Unlike cheap travel insurance offered by other underwriters, our policies have provided long-standing, publicly held companies with a history of exceptional customer service. You get affordable coverage and peace of mind.

The phrase is highly relevant to the page, you get to attract lots of visitors, and the copy is set to convince them that "cheap insurance" isn't what they really wanted after all.

How about this one? I got an email from a student asking me how to use the phrase "doggie litter box" in his copy even though that was not what he was selling. His product was a replacement for the doggie litter box, so I suggested he use the phrase in exactly that way. Here's what I would have done:

Here's a great solution for that messy doggie litter box. Attractive, compact and easy to use even in the smallest apartments, [Name of Product] is destined to replace the doggie litter box forever!

See? You aren't calling your product a litter box; rather you are positioning yourself against it to show how you are better.

Add A Word

Another frequent stumbling block for SEO copywriters is the use of phrases that seem to end abruptly. In these cases, simply add a word to the end. Here are two examples.

The phrase "web design for small business" seems out of place because, most often, we would use the plural term (small businesses) when we were writing. To correct the problem, just add a plural word to the end of the phrase. Perhaps you might talk about web design for small business startups or web design for small business owners. You get the idea.

Break It Up

When the phrases get too long, it is often best to break them up. Search engines don't pay attention to standard punctuation marks or line breaks. They read right through periods, commas, semi-colons and the like without hesitation. That means you have a lot more flexibility than you might think.

One keyphrase I had to work with was "Texas Hill Country real estate." That would get pretty cumbersome if it were left as it is seen there. But by breaking it up with some punctuation, it sounds perfectly natural. Here's how it can be done.

There is no more beautiful place than the Texas Hill Country. Real estate listings in this area are filled with stunning homes that.

Do you see what happened? I broke the phrase up using a period. In the eyes of the search engines the phrase is still intact. They don't even notice the period. That period, however, causes the reader to take a mental pause and helps alleviate any repetitive feel to the copy.

If you take the time to look at SEO copywriting as an art rather than an assembly line task, your content will sound more natural, will convert better and will help prevent further additions to the already overcrowded collection of tortured copy everywhere!

Discover The Difference Between Overture And WordTracker - Keyword Internet Marketing Tool Review

The difffernce point are concenstrated on the keyword research result between both of keyword internet marketing tools. The title of article is "The Different Keyword Search Results Between Overture and Wordtracker".

The detailed information can be found as follows:

"Overture
It is a Pay Per Click Search Engine. According to Overture, its statistics of searches in previous months are compiled from its partners, which include AltaVista, Yahoo, MSN Search, HotBot and All the Web. So the statistics from Overture are broad based because it has a larger network.
Its data, though, has some drawbacks.
1. There's no distinction between...
a. Singular and plural terms.
You have to figure if surfers are searching for the singular or plural form of the keyword.
b. Upper and lower case.
c. Human queries and automated queries.
Queries by automated bid optimizers, position and ranking monitors, link popularity analyzers are registered as hits.
2. Duplicate Searches
For example a person doing a search for a particular key phrase in Yahoo, and then in MSN would be registered as 2 hits.

Wordtracker
It is a keyword generator and analyzer, and it does not have direct access to the major Search Engines' databases. Wordtracker gets a lot of its analyzer data from Meta-crawler and Dogpile, which are meta search engines. Metacrawler and Dogpile search the major Search Engines like Google, Yahoo, MSN Search and Ask Jeeves, and retrieve the best results.

The data of Wordtracker, mostly gathered from Metacrawler and Dogpile, represents only a small percentage of total searches on the Internet.

Wordtracker has about 350 million searches over an 8-week rolling cycle (Source: Search Engine Workshops Weblog, June 30, 2005). Now for some Maths. 350 million searches over 56 days would give an average of 6.25 million searches per day. Google with a share of 36 per cent of Internet traffic (Source: comScore qSearch, July 2005), registers about 112 million of searches per day (Source: Top Ten list, Wordtracker). So in comparison to total searches on the Internet, Wordtracker represents only 2 per cent.

When Wordtracker returns zero query for a particular search phrase, it does not mean that no one searches for it on the Internet.

However, with Wordtracker, automated queries are not added to searches, and duplicate searches are eliminated. Singular and plural, upper case and lower case search terms are distinguished except for keywords where singular, plural, lower or upper case, are similiar in meanings eg.'keyword' and 'keywords'.

Overture or Wordtracker?
For Overture the figures are inflated, whilst for Wordtracker they are under reported. Nonetheless, these are helpful tools for keyword research and selection. Use these figures as guides, and not absolutes to make comparisons in your choice of key words.

For example if keyword phrase 1 has 10,000 searches in Overture, and keyword phrase 2 has 2000 searches, then it is obvious that key phrase 1 would bring in more traffic if your web page is properly optimized. But don't expect 10,000 visitors with key phrase 1."

Personally, I believe that Overture keyword internet marketing tool is suitable for you to get the overview of your keyword phrases and the popularity of your focus keyword phrases. Meanwhile, WordTracker keyword internet marketing tool allows you to find more niche keywords & expand your keywords list easier than Overture. As my experiences, WordTracker is better than Overture if you are looking for niche keywords and expand your keywords list.

"Search engine optimization is the best thing you can do to maximize your online marketing results. For the uninitiated, search engine optimization (SEO) refers to methods of making web sites “friendly” to the different search engines. Optimizing your site doesn’t necessarily guarantee high search engine placement, but you’ll have a much better shot at it than those whose sites aren’t optimized. And the core of search engine optimization — the foundation upon which you’ll base your entire optimization strategy — is the choosing of keywords.

Anyone reading this article is likely to know that you can’t simply guess when it comes to keywords. It’s possible to do everything else right but still fail miserably because you optimized your site for keywords that don’t get any searches. So, at the heart of any optimization strategy lies solid keyword research, and the best way to do it is to use a tool like Wordtracker.

Wordtracker is a keyword research tool that uses metacrawler information to pull keywords and keyphrases from search query databases. (Don’t worry if you didn’t understand that — neither did I.) What it means is, Wordtracker helps you find relevant keywords and then tells you how often they get searches. Here’s how to do it:

First, you’ll need to sign up for an account. You can get a free trial, or you can get a paid membership for a day, a week, a month or a year. The free trial is severely limited and not very helpful; it shows results only for MSN, and it allows you to research just 30 keywords at a time. You’ll want results for Google and Yahoo! most of all, and you’ll have to go through hundreds or thousands of terms before you find the really juicy keywords you’ll want to optimize for. That’s why I recommend signing up for a one-day membership at first. You’ll get to try Wordtracker with all the features enabled, and a day’s membership only costs around seven bucks.

Once you have your account, log in to the members area. Click on “Keyword Universe” (top left) and you’ll get a screen prompting you to enter a search term. Enter a generic term as a jumping-off point. For example, if you run an online dating site, you should enter a term like “get dates online” or “internet dating.” It doesn’t matter if the term is incredibly broad; we’ll narrow it down in the next step.

Let’s go ahead and use the dating example for this exercise. I’ve entered the term “online dating,” leaving both the lateral and thesaurus match options checked. This gives us a lot of different related terms we can expand upon, including a bunch that we might not have come up with on our own.

I’ll now click on “online dating” in these results, which brings up a new box on the right side of the screen. This is a list of all the search queries for the term “online dating” that appear in Wordtracker’s database. The first column (”Keyword”) shows the search query; the second (”Count”) shows the number of times the search query appears in the database; the third (”Predict”) predicts the number of searches for that query in any given 24-hour period; and the fourth (”Dig”) lets you “dig deeper” to find even more specific variations of that query (click on the shovel icon to dig deeper). Clicking on a search query in this list will add it to your keyword basket, or you can choose to add all of them at once. I’ll add them all, and then click on the blue arrow in the bottom right corner (”Click here for step 3″).

Now we have a few options. “Export Keywords” sends the list to a text file that you can print out or cut-and-paste. “E-mail Keywords” lets you e-mail the list to yourself or anyone else. “Competition Search” is what we’re really after, so click on that. This will bring you to a screen that lets you choose two search engines to check for competing sites. Definitely choose Google, and you’ll probably want to choose either Yahoo! or MSN for your second one. Leave “KEI Analysis” and “Quotes” set to “Yes,” and then click “Proceed.”

We now come to a page that ranks our keywords by KEI, or Keyword Effectiveness Index. You’ll notice that each search term has been assigned a KEI value. The higher this is, the better the search term; i.e., pick a search term with a high KEI value, and it’ll be easier to optimize your site for it. Each term has a different KEI depending on the search engine, so be sure to check the same terms in different engines, depending on which ones you want to rank on.

According to Wordtracker, KEI is determined by comparing the number of competing sites for that term with the number of times it appears in the Wordtracker database. A KEI value of 10 or less means a poor keyword, between 10 and 100 is a good keyword, between 100 and 400 is an excellent keyword, and 400 and up is a great keyword.

The results for “online dating” don’t look very good. Our best term for Google is “dating agencies online in somerset,” with a KEI value of 84.941. If this happens to be your niche — that is, online dating agencies in Somerset — then this is a fantastic keyword. For most of us, this would be pretty useless. We can see that the next one down is “top online search adult dating service hiv positive dating” with a KEI value of 22.091. Again, probably not quite the niche we’re in, and the KEI isn’t nearly as high as we’d like it to be.

At this point, you’d go back to step one, choose a different result, and repeat the process all over again. With some patience, you’ll uncover those juicy niche keywords with high counts and low competition, and these are the words you’ll optimize your site for."

6. Optimize your site size - Too many images or very large images on your web page will slow down your server and cause slow loading times for your site. Slice large images into smaller pieces with a graphic editors. Also to long of pages and to much text will do the same.

7. Find backward links - Web sites that link to yours raise your link popularity. Search for web sites that are compatible with yours. Write articles that are related to your site and submit them to sites like Articlecity.com."

How To Do Your Keyword Research For Your Own Website

Recently, I found a great article written by Arnie Kuenn who is a president of Instant Keyword Research. His article is "The Right Way To Use Keywords On Your Website". I think that it will be very helpful for you who are looking for the way to do your own keyword research for your website.

"In today’s world of Internet lingo, you may frequently hear the terms “keywords,” “search engine rankings,” and “keyword search results” bandied about. However, not everyone knows what keywords are, and how important they are to the success of a website.

Keywords are essentially words or phrases that summarize the topic of a site. When a Web surfer types a word or phrase into the blank field of a search engine such as MSN or Google, the search engine returns a list of related sites. Each site on this list is determined by the presence of the search terms, or keywords, in the site’s meta tags, image tags, and content.

Placing keywords strategically throughout your web pages will greatly improve your rankings in the search engines. Many sites, however, leave them out altogether so their site won't get ranked at all. Inserting too many keywords in your web pages or repeating them too often, will result in your site getting banned from the search engines. This is called keyword spamming.

Keywords and Meta Tags
Meta tags are like a site’s “dog tags.” They identify the site’s title, description, and keywords. Meta tags are invisible to Web surfers, but they are instrumental in a search engine’s recognition of the site’s content.

Title Tags

A title tag gives the title of the Web page. A title should only be around six words long, and the primary keyword – the word or phrase that the site is primarily identified with – should be in this title tag. The closer to the beginning of the title the primary keyword is, the stronger the association with that keyword will be.

Description Tags

A Web page’s description tag provides the search engines with a summary of the content contained on the page. Once again, the primary keywords for this page should be contained in the description, as close to the beginning as possible. Description tags only allow 200 characters of text.


Keyword Tags
The keyword tag lists all of the keywords that can be associated with the Web page. The primary keyword used in the title and description tags should be first, followed by other keywords in order of importance and relevance. Although keywords can be separated by commas, they don’t have to be; however, keywords should not be repeated more than three times, lest the Web page be rejected by the search engines as spam. Between 800 and 1,000 characters are allowed for keyword text. Note: if you add a keyword phrase to your Keyword Tags, it must be found in the content on that page.

Here are some things to remember:

  • Don't use the same keyword more than 3 times.
  • Use keywords that occur in your Title Tag and Description Tag.
  • Use only 200 characters for all your keywords.
  • Use different keywords for all your pages.
  • Only use keywords that appear in the content on that page.
  • Use lower case letters.
  • Use the single and plural forms of your keywords.
  • Use commas or spaces between your keywords or keyword phrases.

Keywords and Image Tags
Image tags are the text that shows up in place of an image, if the image fails to load for any reason. However, image tags serve a more important function: they allow the search engines to “read” your images. Without image tags, search engines have no way of interpreting your images. Therefore, image tags can also help boost the visibility and relevancy of your site to search engines.

Heading Tags
These tags hold separate topics between paragraphs and range from H1, which is very large and bold to H6, which is very small and bold. Your page heading H1 should contain your most important keywords or keyword phrase.

Alt Tag
This tag is used to add text in place of the image. The user may have turned off reading the graphics to make the page load faster. Therefore he will read the ALT Tag text instead. Add short keyword rich text to your graphic links. Make sure the ALT text describes the link destination.

Hypertext Links
Include your keywords or keyword phrase in your link text.

Keywords and Web Page Content
The tags that you use on a Web page are important identifiers for search engines. However, in order to maintain a respectable search engine ranking, your Web page must establish relevancy. In other words, the keywords in your tags must pertain to the actual content on the page. Therefore, the same keywords you list in your tags must be used within the text your page displays.

The most important part of the content is the opening paragraph. The primary keyword – the keyword that was used in the title and description, and listed first in the keyword text – should be used several times in the first paragraph, and then occasionally throughout the rest of the page. Other, less important keywords can be used occasionally throughout the content, as well. This will indicate to the search engines that your page really is relevant to the keywords listed in your tags.

Another way to judge keywords is via a concept called “keyword density.” Keyword density shows the frequency at which a keyword is used. The density is calculated by taking the total number of words and dividing it into the number of times keywords appear in the text. The resulting number is multiplied by 100 to create a percentage. Keyword density can be a tricky business, however. Too low a density will fail to be noticed by the search engines, whereas too high a density can cause a Web page to be rejected as spam. Typically, a keyword density of around 3-5% is sufficient.

Content
Search Engine spiders put more weight on keyword rich content that is higher up on the page rather than in the middle or lower sections. Insert your keywords and keyword phrases in your text at least three times. Remember, search engines spiders will not index any area that is protected by a password.

The Importance of Keywords
Consumers are five times more likely to purchase your products after seeing search engine listings versus banners. Implementing these strategies mentioned, may not get you a number one ranking in the Search Engines, but you definitely have a distinct advantage over those Web Sites that have not done any optimizing. Keywords are a vital part of the creation of Web pages because they directly affect how visible the page will be to search engine traffic. The presence of keywords needs to be a consideration in every aspect of designing a Web page: designing the tags as well as writing the content. Because of the impact keywords can have on the success of your site, it’s important to know how to use them properly."
